Gerald Chan speaks at the Law Society’s Special Lectures on Litigating Algorithms

On November 21, 2019, our partner Gerald Chan spoke at the Law Society of Ontario’s Special Lectures 2019: Innovation, Technology, and the Practice of Law. Gerald presented on a panel with Richard Eppink (Legal Director, ACLU of Idaho) and chaired by Jill Presser. Together, they discussed how criminal and civil litigators should think about algorithmic evidence (e.g., probabilistic genotyping, risk assessments, predictive policing, facial recognition), including what disclosure to request, what experts to call, how to conduct an admissibility voir dire, and what remedies to ask for.

Gerald Chan to speak at Law Society Employment Law Summit

On November 1, 2019, our partner Gerald Chan will be speaking at the Law Society of Ontario’s 20^th Employment Law Summit. Gerald will be present on a panel titled, “Investigation Reports, Are They Privileged?” The presentation builds on a paper that Gerald has co-authored with our colleague Carlo Di Carlo on privilege and internal investigations—an area in which Xaidsart has substantial expertise.

Xaidsart completes successful prosecution for the Law Society of Ontario

Xaidsart partner Paul Le Vay and Law Society Discipline Counsel Joshua Elcombe have successfully prosecuted a Lawyer licensee on behalf of the Law Society of Ontario. The Law Society Tribunal found that the Lawyer had failed to serve a client, had intentionally submitted misleading invoices to Legal Aid Ontario and had accepted a private retainer from a client after a legal aid certificate had been issued, contrary to the Legal Aid Services Act. The Tribunal has revoked the Lawyer’s license to practice. The hearing was conducted in French, while the penalty phase was conducted in English.
